Apple TV+ has renewed its hit sci-fi series, Silo, for a third season. The show — based on Hugh Howey’s trilogy of dystopian novels Wool, Shift and Dust — explores the lives of the last 10,000 people on Earth who live in a mile-deep silo complex, at arm’s length from a toxic outside world.

The residents, who must adhere to strict rules to keep them safe, are unaware of the silo’s origin, and for those who seek answers, fatal consequences follow. At the center is Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson), an engineer looking to solve a murder and learn more about how humanity came to live in a silo.

Season 3 of the sci-fi drama will take viewers back to pre-apocalyptic times and explore the events that led up to the isolated civilization. Notably, the storyline will feature daylight, a departure from the dimly lit episodes previously set underground.

“We will be outdoors, and we will be in the world, and there will be sunshine,” show creator Graham Yost told TVLine in January 2025.

Will there be a Silo season 3?

Yes, Silo will return for a third season. Unlike Howey’s trilogy, though, the series will have a fourth installment, according to Deadline, which will mark the end of the show.

“It has been a richly rewarding experience to adapt Hugh’s epic novels with our partners at Apple, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this complete story to the screen over the course of four seasons,” Yost said in an Apple TV+ press release in December 2024.

What is Silo season 3 about?

Silo season 3 will be based on the second book in Howey’s trilogy, Shift. The plot will take place three centuries before humanity lived underground and detail the silo’s creation.

“We get into the origin story [of the Pez dispenser], but we’re also deep into our silo world,” Yost told TIME in January 2025. “There’ll also be more to learn about the dirty bomb.”

The showrunner explained that more information will be revealed about what happened to silo 17 — where Juliette spent most of season 2 — including why its residents went outside and what happened to them afterward.

“That’s a big thing that will get solved,” Yost added.

As season 3’s narrative explores the beginning of different storylines, some scenes will happen in the outside world.

The creator told TVLine, “Something that [executive producer/writer] Fred Golan said was, ‘Let’s make every effort to make the world that we see outside beautiful, so that we’re reminded of what’s been lost.’ ”

He also teased to Empire magazine that the third installment will set up the final season. “There’s a big location that we’re going to introduce toward the end of season 3 that plays a very big role in season 4,” he said in December 2024.

Who is in the Silo season 3 cast?

While there hasn’t been an official announcement confirming the cast for season 3, most of the main characters are expected to return, including Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette Nichols and Steve Zahn as Jimmy Conroy a.k.a. Solo.

Common, Harriet Walter, Clare Perkins, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, Alexandria Riley, Remmie Milner and Shane McRae will likely reprise their roles as well.

Following their appearance in the Silo season 2 finale, it has been confirmed that Game of Thrones actress Jessica Henwick (Helen) and Succession star Ashley Zukerman (Congressman Daniel) are joining the cast as season 3 regulars.

Two castmates who possibly won’t return for the third season are Tim Robbins (Bernard) and Iain Glen (Dr. Pete Nichols).

When is the Silo season 3 release date?

While an exact premiere date has not yet been announced, Apple TV revealed on X that filming wrapped for season 3 in May 2025.

Yost confirmed to The Wrap in January 2025 that aside from a short pre-production period for the final installment, filming for seasons 3 and 4 will occur back-to-back.

Where can I watch Silo?

Silo is available to watch on Apple TV+. Seasons 1 and 2 can be streamed with a subscription, and season 3 will follow suit when its weekly episodes eventually drop.
