House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer on Friday indefinitely postponed the scheduled deposition for Ghislaine Maxwell, a former associate of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, at her lawyer’s behest.

The Oversight Committee on July 23 subpoenaed Maxwell for a deposition scheduled for August 11. Comer postponed the upcoming deposition after attorney David Oscar Markus, who is representing Maxwell, threatened that his client would plead the Fifth if she did not receive immunity and other protections in exchange for her testimony, according to Politico.

Comer said the committee was “willing to continue to engage in good faith negotiations,” but would not grant Maxwell immunity or comply with her lawyers’ demands to send her team the questions in advance, Politico reported. He agreed to postpone the deposition until after the Supreme Court rules on Maxwell’s appeal, which is asking the highest court to overturn her 2021 sex trafficking conviction based on a 2008 non-prosecution agreement (NPA) involving Epstein in the Southern District of Florida. Markus’ list of demands to the committee asserted that his client must have received the questions in advance for proper “preparation,” and also argued that Maxwell did not receive a fair trial and was “wrongfully convicted.”

Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence over her alleged involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes. She met with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche for two meetings held on July 24 and July 25 to discuss her ties with Epstein and answer questions about her role in his trafficking network, and she answered questions about nearly 100 people allegedly connected to Epstein.

President Donald Trump did not commit to whether or not he would pardon Maxwell by simply saying he is “allowed” to during a Monday press conference.
