Netflix’s The Sandman has love stories that are tangled, tragic and anything but ordinary — a stark contrast to the cast’s real-life romances.
The dark fantasy series, based on Neil Gaiman’s DC comic book of the same name, follows Dream (Tom Sturridge), also known as Morpheus, one of the Endless — a family of powerful, immortal entities that personify universal concepts such as Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Destiny (Adrian Lester).
At the start of the story, Dream is captured in an occult ritual and imprisoned for more than a century. When he finally escapes, he must reclaim his lost tools of power, restore his crumbling kingdom and confront the consequences of his long absence. The final episode of the Netflix series premiered on July 31.
Off-screen, the cast members of The Sandman have far less drama. Sturridge and his rumored fiancée, Alexa Chung, confirmed their romance in 2022. Meanwhile, Gwendoline Christie’s longtime boyfriend, fashion designer Giles Deacon, doesn’t just embrace her cold and calculating character — he comes up with all of her regal costumes.
Here’s everything to know about the real-life loves of The Sandman cast.

Sturridge, who plays the brooding Dream, has been dating model Alexa Chung since at least July 2022.
Engagement rumors swirled around the couple in June 2023, though they haven’t publicly confirmed any wedding plans. Despite keeping their relationship largely out of the spotlight, Chung and Sturridge have been spotted together at a number of high-profile events like Wimbledon and the Met Gala.
Additionally, Chung made a rare mention of the actor while speaking to Interview Magazine in November 2024.
“I don’t date people that aren’t smarter than me,” she told the outlet. “I can be emotionally more intelligent, and I think in this instance Tom [Sturridge] is far more well-read than me. My goal is to read his library of books so that I can brain-match him.”

However, the actress is fond of her character’s on-screen relationship with Dream.
“I think the dynamic that they have … she’s almost his moral compass,” Acheampong told Popverse in August 2022. “She stands back, she observes, she advises him in the best way that she can in order for him to succeed, because that’s what she wants. I think there’s a lot of love there.”

“I’m intrigued to meet new people, but let’s be honest, if a date’s boring, I won’t waste anyone’s time,” the actress continued. “Life’s too short to sit through tales of someone’s coin collection. I’ll be gone before the starter arrives.”

Beyond dressing Christie for many red carpet appearances, Deacon is also the designer behind the actress’s entire wardrobe in The Sandman.
“Gwendoline provided me with great insight into her vision of the character from a sense of action [and] poise,” he told Netflix’s Tudum in August 2022. “This really helped to galvanize the sense of silhouette, graphicness, color choices, fabrications and overall direction of the costumes.”
