NEED TO KNOW

  • Hulu released the trailer for the upcoming limited series, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, starring Grace Van Patten

  • In the trailer, the exoneree exclaims, “Many people think they know my story. But now, finally, it’s my turn to tell it”

  • Knox serves as an executive producer of the series

Amanda Knox’s “nightmare” becomes a reality in the upcoming Hulu series, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.

Grace Van Patten takes on the role of the exoneree in the new limited series, which was inspired by the story of Knox’s wrongful murder conviction “and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free,” according to the official synopsis.

The trailer for The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox begins with Knox explaining her decision to return to Italy under intense media scrutiny, saying, “Why would I return to a country where I was convicted of murder? Because in order to move forward, I need to go back.”

A quick rewind brings viewers back to 2007, when Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were accused of killing her roommate, Meredith Kercher, while studying abroad in Perugia, Italy.

“In 2007, I was halfway around the world, studying abroad in Italy,” Knox says in a voiceover as she is seen arriving home to find the crime scene. “I had no idea that my dream was about to become a nightmare.”

As the investigation into the murder intensifies, her boyfriend (Giuseppe De Domenico) informs her, “There is a body. It’s Meredith.”

The couple is then snapped kissing as the photographer asks, “Anyone know who these two kids are?”

Following the kiss, Knox is questioned about the killing. One investigator asks, “Where did you go the night of Meredith’s murder?” while another presses, “Were you in the bedroom while he killed her?”

“Do I need a lawyer right now?” Knox responds.

Knox is then seen begging to escape a jail cell and her father demands to know why “they are going after our daughter.”

As her innocence is questioned, Knox begs, “This is my life we’re talking about.”

As the trailer concludes, Knox adds, “For 15 years, I’ve been defined by something that I didn’t do. Many people think they know my story. But now, finally, it’s my turn to tell it.”

For Knox, it was difficult to witness the scenes being shot that featured police questioning her.

“I did not lose my s— on set except for that time,” she recalled to Vanity Fair. “We spent two 10-hour days doing this scene from all the different angles over and over and over again.”

“I feel a deep sense of responsibility to get that right, so that the next person who is wrongly accused and ends up falsely confessing feels like people are more willing to believe them … I just remember sobbing.”

Despite having to recall some difficult moments, Knox admitted, “I wasn’t interested in having yet another person’s voice telling the worst experience of my life for who knows what reason.”

The show comes nearly 20 years after Knox was initially found guilty of the murder of a British college student.

Knox and Sollecito were accused of murdering Kercher while studying abroad in Perugia, Italy in 2007. Although she was found guilty in 2009, she was acquitted two years later and returned home to Seattle, Washington.

Then, in 2013, the Italian courts ordered a retrial of her case and ultimately sentenced her to over 28 years in prison. She did not travel back to the country and was not extradited, and in 2015, Italy’s highest court of appeals once again overturned her conviction after DNA proved a sole drifter named Rudy Guede committed the crime.

Since then, she has used her platform to advocate for criminal justice in the decade since. Part of Knox’s mission has been to prevent the wrongful convictions of others over the past decade.

Shortly before her final exoneration, she penned a memoir about the ordeal, titled Waiting to Be Heard, which became a New York Times bestseller. She also participated in a Netflix documentary titled Amanda Knox in 2016 and was nominated the following year for two Primetime Emmy Awards.
