  • Harrison Ford recalled how he accidentally punched costar Ryan Gosling during the making of 2017’s Blade Runner 2049

  • The actor said he “apologized right away” to Gosling: “What more could I do? Can’t take back a punch”

  • Gosling previously joked about taking the punch, saying “a Harrison Ford punch is a different animal altogether”

Harrison Ford is still sorry about accidentally punching Ryan Gosling in the face.

The actors shared the screen in 2017’s Blade Runner 2049, the long-awaited sequel to Ford’s 1982 sci-fi classic. During a new wide-ranging interview with Variety, Ford, 83, joked about the time he mistakenly landed a jab at Gosling, 44, while filming a scene, an incident they’ve both discussed in the past.

“[We were rehearsing a fight] and we got too close and I hit him,” said Ford. “I apologized right away. What more could I do? Can’t take back a punch. Just take it.”

The Shrinking Emmy nominee joked of the Barbie star, “He’s a very handsome man. He’s still very handsome.”

In December 2016, Gosling said being punched by Ford was somewhat of a “rite of passage,” explaining to GQ that Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve told him right after the hit: “Look at it this way — you just got hit by Indiana Jones!”

“We were just doing a fight scene and, you know, it just happened,” Gosling told the outlet at the time. “But what was funny was, when it was over, they brought ice for my face, and Harrison pushed me out of the way and stuck his fist in the ice.”

Gosling added, “He came by afterward with this bottle of scotch, and I thought, ‘Oh, I knew this was coming.’ And he pulled out a glass from his pocket, poured me a glass, and walked away with the rest of the bottle. So I guess he felt like he didn’t connect enough to earn a whole bottle.”

The costars laughed about the punch while promoting Blade Runner 2049 on The Graham Norton Show. The host said, “You weren’t meant to punch him,” and Ford quipped, “Oh, I misread the script.”

He further added of the moment, “One out of a hundred times I hit him,” to which Gosling joked, “Right, right. I should be lucky I didn’t get hit more, is the theme of this narrative.”

“It’s not just a punch, though. I mean, a Harrison Ford punch is a different animal altogether,” said Gosling.

In the July 2025 Variety interview, Ford said he “enjoyed the experience of making” Blade Runner 2049 “even more than I did the first one” mostly because “it wasn’t raining and it wasn’t night all the time,” like on the first, directed by Ridley Scott.

Of the original, he recalled, “That was an extraordinary experience. We shot for 50 nights in rain — most times, we were outside. It was sort of miserable to make, but it holds its own.”
