“I think I’m such an outwardly expressive person, and so when we originally found out, I think the kids were really aware of how it hit me in particular,” Catherine, 39, says. “They’re very good at consoling [but] they’re too young, really, to understand what’s exactly happening.”
Noting that “every kid processes it differently,” Sean, 41, tells Parade that the couple has done “the best we could” amid navigating the tragedy, in which more than 100 people died.
“Janie, who Catherine was really close to, who we lost, was a classmate of Samuel’s. And Samuel, he sees his mom breaking down in tears, and I think he understands what’s going on,” the Bachelor alum says. “We kind of talked through that and made sure, like, emotionally he was good. But I just think at his age, at least for him, he doesn’t really understand the gravity of it all, he doesn’t really understand why it’s so heart wrenching for mommy.”
He continues: “As parents, we’re putting ourselves in their shoes too, thinking just how in the world do you go on? And the hole they must have in their hearts and all that stuff. So in terms of the kids processing, they don’t understand that part of it. He just knows that his friend is no longer with us, and she’s in heaven. But I think as parents, we did the best we could, and I think our kids are kind of processing it pretty well.”
As for their partnership with Atkins, Sean and Catherine tell Parade that the brand’s products help them stay healthy together.
“It’s impossible to be healthy when your partner is not,” Sean says, to which Catherine adds, “Atkins has made it super easy for us to have accountability with each other, and also just have this low carb, higher protein lifestyle that really affects our wellness journey more so than a weight-loss journey. And so we’ve just been really excited to see their snacks, shakes and recipes to help keep us on track. And again, doing it inside the house, together with your partner, has been very helpful.”
