Sliced pears sold nationwide were recently recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and their manufacturer, W.W. Industrial Group, Inc., because they may contain the toxic substances lead and cadmium.

The company is recalling 15-ounce cans of Parashore Pear Slices in juice after a sample by the Maryland Department of Health, which is part of the FDA Laboratory Flexible Funding Model program, detected the issue.

Keep reading for specific details about the recalled product.

Sliced pear recall details

The cans were distributed through Grocery Outlet stores in California and other Grocery Outlet stores across the United States. The labeling details of recalled cans are as follows:

  • PARASHORE Pear Slices in Juice, 15 ounces (425 g): UPC 704817164237, Lot 3700/01172 6122J, Produced on 02/19/2024, Best by 2/19/2027

At the time of publication, no illnesses related to the recall have been reported. W.W. Industrial Group, Inc. and the FDA are conducting an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of heavy metal exposure.

About lead and cadmium

Lead and cadmium are toxic heavy metal substances present in our environment in small amounts, and everyone is exposed to some level of them daily while inhaling dust, eating food, or drinking water, according to the FDA. That small exposure to the population at large does not pose a significant public health concern, the agency added.

However, exposure to larger amounts of lead and cadmium may cause poisoning that could vary in severity depending on exposure levels and a person’s age at the time of exposure. Symptoms of lead poisoning can include abdominal pain, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, weakness, behavior or mood changes, delirium, seizures, and coma. In infants, young children, and a developing fetus, symptoms can be much less noticeable at first but lead to significant learning disabilities, developmental delays, and lower IQ scores, the FDA said.

What to do with recalled product

Consumers who have purchased recalled Parashore Pear Slices should not consume them and are urged to throw them away or return them to their place of purchase for a full refund. If you have questions, contact the manufacturer at 516-676-9188 from Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST.
