The man charged with two counts of murder in the shooting deaths of longtime American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband, musician Thomas DeLuca, used the own couple’s gun against them and then called authorities on his cellphone, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has alleged.

Suspect Raymond Boodarian, 22, gave police his name while on the call after shooting Kaye and DeLuca, both 70, which is how authorities tracked him down, District Attorney Nathan Hochman said at a town hall Monday evening in L.A.’s Encino neighborhood, according to KABC-TV.

In a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, a spokesperson said, “The District Attorney’s Office can confirm that the suspect placed a 911 call and that the firearm involved in the homicide was registered to the victim. As this remains an active investigation and pending court matter, we are unable to share additional details at this time.”

Boodarian is accused of entering Kaye and DeLuca’s Encino home around 4 p.m. on July 10, while they were away. When the couple returned, authorities have alleged, a confrontation ensued and Boodarian shot them multiple times before fleeing the area. The couple’s bodies were found several days later during a welfare check. It is currently unclear whether Boodarian had any prior connection to Kaye or DeLuca.

Boodarian is expected to be arraigned Aug. 20. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty.

EW has not been able to obtain contact information for Boodarian’s legal representation.

Kaye worked on American Idol for a decade and a half and was remembered as a “cornerstone of the Idol family” in a statement issued by the show. “We are devastated to hear of Robin and her dear husband, Tom’s, passing,” the statement added. “Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time.”

A three-time Guild of Music Supervisors Awards winner, Kaye also worked in the music department across several Miss Universe specials and the NAACP Image Awards, as well as Lip Sync Battle, The Singing Bee, and Hollywood Game Night. DeLuca was a singer, songwriter, and composer who had been releasing music since 1986 and penned songs for Diesel, Meredith Brooks, the Monkees’ Micky Dolenz, and Joe Perry.
