King Charles has issued a personal message to the England women’s football team after they won their Euro semi-final in Geneva this evening. Posting on social media, the King described the team as “remarkable” after they beat Italy 2-1 in a nail-biting game to reach Sunday’s final.
“My wife and I join all our family in wishing you, the proud Lionesses, our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the U.E.F.A EURO tournament,” the King said.
“Your journey to this stage has been nothing short of remarkable, showcasing the skill, determination (and test of nerve!) for which your team is so rightly celebrated. Knowing the Lionesses’ fighting spirit, I suspect we are in for another thrilling encounter on Sunday. Your achievements continue to inspire countless girls and women across the nation, proving once again that with dedication and teamwork, anything is possible. Good luck, England. May you roar to victory once more.”
The King signed the message Charles R, with the R meaning Rex which is Latin for King.
Prince William, who is Patron of the FA, did not attend the match but Kensington Palace posted on social media after the game. “Brilliant performance @Lionesses! One game from glory! ⚽️ #WEURO2025,” the message read. The Prince met with the team before they headed out to Switzerland and watched one of their earlier games.

The match this evening at Geneva’s Stade de Genève was almost over at full time until the Lionesses scored a last-minute goal taking the score to 1-1 and the game to extra time. A penalty for England in extra time saw them score again to make the final score 2-1.
They will face either Spain or Germany in the final on Sunday depending on the result of the next semi-final.
