Snake eggs might not look like much on their own, but when grouped in a clutch, their combined weight can be surprising. However, just as different species of snakes vary in length and size, so do their eggs. In fact, some snake egg clutches can weigh as little as a few ounces, while others exceed 15 pounds. A recent video showcases just how large a clutch can be as a handler removes the eggs from a reticulated python enclosure. While these eggs tend to be among the largest of all snake species, other species also lay large clusters of eggs.
It’s easy to assume that egg clutch size correlates with the size of the snake, but that’s not always the case. While it’s true that larger snakes typically have bigger eggs and larger clutches, other factors can impact both quantity and size. With the exception of a few species, most snakes reproduce by laying eggs in groups rather than one at a time. These clutches offer several benefits for the mother and the unborn snakes, including maximizing reproductive success, conserving energy, and improving egg development.
Maximizing Reproductive Success
Laying multiple eggs at once increases the odds that at least some will survive until maturity. In the wild, animal eggs face a variety of challenges, such as predators and environmental changes. To help improve the odds of her hatchlings making it to adulthood, a mother snake will produce large clutches of eggs.
Conserving Energy
Egg production is physically demanding for snakes and uses a lot of their energy, which is why they lay all of their eggs at once. By laying all her eggs at once, the female minimizes the time and energy spent on reproduction. This also allows her to return to her normal routine more quickly.
Improving Egg Development
It’s common for snakes to build their nests underground or beneath vegetation when preparing to lay eggs. While these spots may offer better protection from predators, they do expose the eggs to colder temperatures. Scientists believe that snakes have evolved to lay their eggs in clutches to offer some protection against colder temperatures. Grouped eggs can benefit from shared warmth and humidity, especially when the mother coils around the clutch.
How Many Eggs Typically Make Up a Clutch?
Just as clutch size varies, the number of eggs a snake can lay also varies greatly. For instance, threadsnakes generally only lay a single egg, while some reticulated pythons can produce as many as 100 eggs.
Although not every snake lays as many eggs as the reticulated python, most will have between 10 and 30 eggs in their clutches. Often, the biggest factors that impact egg count include:

Size and age of the mother
Health of the female snake
Environmental temperature and humidity
Local ecosystem dynamics

How Big Are Snake Egg Clutches?
In terms of physical size, snake egg clutches can take up a shocking amount of space. Individual snake eggs are often oblong and leathery, and can measure anywhere from one to five inches long. A full clutch that’s tightly coiled together could be well over a foot in height, depending on the number of eggs produced by the female.
What’s the Average Weight of a Snake Clutch?
Identifying the actual average weight of a snake clutch is challenging since they vary drastically from species to species. If you exclude the heaviest clutch-laying snakes, the average weight for a group of eggs is typically around one to three pounds. However, it really does vary from snake to snake. Even snakes of the same species can have vastly different clutch sizes and weights.
How Heavy Are Reticulated Python Clutches?

Reticulated pythons are known for having the largest egg clutches among snake species. However, there are even subtle variances in weight between different females. On average, a female reticulated python will have around 30-50 eggs. However, some older and larger females have produced up to 100 eggs at a time. Since most reticulated python eggs weigh between 7 and 10 ounces, a clutch of 30 to 60 eggs would weigh approximately 30 to 60 pounds. Generally, captive pythons produce larger and heavier clutches compared to their counterparts living in the wild.
