(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump and the First Lady on Friday afternoon visited the site of the devastating flash floods that occurred in Central Texas on July 4 to observe the damage and meet some of the affected families.

The flood in Texas Hill Country is one of its deadliest on record, leaving 121 confirmed dead and about 170 still missing. Rainfall totals from the evening of July 3 into July 4 ranged from five to 15 inches, even exceeding 18 inches in some parts of the state, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In Central Texas, the deluge caused the Guadalupe River to overflow its banks and surge into surrounding communities.

The president approved a major disaster declaration for certain affected localities on July 6. As of July 11, Burnet, Kerr, San Saba, Tom Green, Travis, and Williamson counties are eligible for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Individual Assistance program. Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Menard, and San Saba counties are eligible for FEMA’s Public Assistance program, according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

A number of other Washington officials and lawmakers joined both Trump and Abbott for a roundtable with first responders and local officials Friday afternoon.

This is a developing story.
