House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) continued to take aim Thursday at former President Biden’s White House physician Kevin O’Connor after the doctor would not answer questions about Biden’s health after he was called to testify this week.
“When Joe Biden’s doctor was asked under oath whether he had ever been instructed to lie about Joe Biden’s health, he pleaded the Fifth,” Comer posted on the social platform X. “When questioned under oath about whether he believed Biden was fit to serve, he again pleaded the Fifth.”
“President Trump is right: this is the biggest scandal in Oval Office history,” Comer added.
Comer, a close ally of Trump, has been leading a probe into Biden’s health while in office and whether top White House aides tried to cover up a decline in his mental acuity. Biden, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May, has rejected suggestions that he wasn’t fit for office while in the White House.
O’Connor’s attorney said in a statement Wednesday that the physician declined to answer questions during Wednesday’s deposition to protect doctor-patient privilege.
“This Committee has indicated to Dr. O’Connor and his attorneys that it does not intend to honor one of the most well-known privileges in our law – the physician patient privilege,” the statement read. “Instead, the Committee has indicated that it will demand that Dr. O’Connor reveal, without any limitations, confidential information regarding his medical examinations, treatment, and care of President Biden.”
But Comer has repeatedly pushed back since Wednesday’s meeting and released video of the exchange with O’Connor after it ended.
“President Biden’s White House physician pled the Fifth,” Comer told reporters Wednesday. “This is unprecedented, and I think that this adds more fuel to the fire that there was a cover-up.”
House Republicans have sought multiple interviews with Biden administration officials and others in the president’s inner circle, after books including “Original Sin” by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’s Alex Thompson reignited questions about Biden’s health and possible cognitive decline.
Comer previously attempted to question O’Connor and top Biden aides last year, but the effort was blocked while Biden was in the White House under executive privilege. Trump waved that shield earlier this year.
