NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman was invited to her friend’s destination wedding, but she had to tell the bride-to-be she can’t afford to attend

  • In a post on Reddit, the woman explained that she recently lost her job and is living off “unemployment benefits”

  • The Redditor was then “floored” when her friend suggested selling some limited-edition designer bags she owns to help fund her travel to the wedding

A woman, who says she is currently experiencing financial difficulties, told her friend that she won’t be able to afford to attend her destination wedding. The bride-to-be then made a surprising suggestion that “floored” her.

The woman shared her story in a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” forum, explaining that the bride informed her last year of her plan to get married in a destination wedding this November. Since then, the OP (original poster) was laid off from her job without any severance pay. She said she has been living off “unemployment benefits” while she looks for a new job.

In light of this, she has not booked any travel arrangements for her friend’s wedding because it would require her to spend at least $3,000. When she told the bride that she will have to skip the wedding if she can’t find a job within the next month, the bride pressed her, saying “I promised her and she’d feel bad if I can’t make it,” according to the OP.

The bride then asked the OP to sell a few of the limited-edition designer bags she owns to raise some money for the wedding expenses.

The OP explained that she purchased some of the bags in her collection when she was previously employed. “I’m not very into designer goods, but the last few years a few of my favorite artists did collaborations with some designer brands,” she noted, estimating that her collection is worth around $9,000.

But she doesn’t want to part with any of her bags. “These bags are sold out everywhere,” she explained.

The OP also recalled being taken aback by her friend’s “presumptuous” suggestion.

“I was floored to hear my friend saying I should just sell a few of my bags and I’d afford [the wedding] just fine. I’m floored and think she’s joking so I move on, but she says she’s serious [and] if I valued her I’d do it,” she wrote.

Seeking advice on the situation, the woman concluded her post by asking fellow Redditors, “Am I going crazy or is she actually right?”

In the comments, many readers agreed that the bride-to-be was overstepping by telling the OP to sell some of her possessions.

“Bridezilla is delusional and not a friend if she expects you to sell any of your possessions to go to her extravagant destination wedding,” one person replied. “If she wants you there, she can pay for your travel and accommodations.”

“This is not a friend. Keep your bags,” another advised.

Someone else pointed out that if the OP should ever be in a position where she needs to sell her beloved bags, it shouldn’t be for a wedding.

“If you have to choose between food and bags, lose the bags, but a wedding? No, that is not a life-or-death situation for you. No one should need to sell their own possessions to afford going to a wedding. The bride is out of line,” they wrote.

Others took the opportunity to vent their frustrations about the expectations surrounding destination weddings in general.

“Destination weddings are ridiculous, even if you aren’t unemployed,” one reader commented. “[In my opinion], it takes a lot of audacity to demand people to go into debt and make sacrifices for a 5-hour party in their honor.”
