President Trump insisted Tuesday there would be “no extensions” on tariffs set to go into effect on dozens of countries Aug. 1, despite saying a day earlier that the deadline was “not 100 percent firm.”

“As per letters sent to various countries yesterday, in addition to letters that will be sent today, tomorrow, and for the next short period of time, TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025,” Trump posted to Truth Social.

“There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change,” he continued. “In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 — No extensions will be granted.”

Trump signed an executive order Monday officially delaying the imposition of “reciprocal” tariffs on other nations until Aug. 1. Those tariffs had been set to go into effect Wednesday after an initial 90-day delay.

But the president indicated he could be open to pushing the deadline back further if countries came to him with a deal he liked.

“I would say firm, but not 100 percent firm,” Trump said of the Aug. 1 date. “If they call up and they say, ‘We’d like to do something a different way,’ we’re going to be open to that. But essentially that’s the way it is right now.”

Trump announced Monday the U.S. would impose a 25 percent tariff on Japan and South Korea, two of the U.S.’s largest trading partners.

He also announced tariff rates that will go into effect next month on goods from Indonesia (32 percent), Bangladesh (35 percent), South Africa (30 percent), Malaysia (25 percent) and a handful of other countries. Trump is expected to announce various other tariff rates throughout the week.

The timing and severity of tariffs on other nations have been shifting targets since Trump took office, after vowing on the campaign trail to aggressively impose duties on imports. He has repeatedly threatened tariffs on other nations, only to back off or delay their imposition.

The “reciprocal” tariffs are separate from sector-based tariffs on automobiles, steel and aluminum and other goods that have been announced.
