More zip codes added to lead testing

More ZIP codes are being added to the lead testing list. The Illinois Department of Public Health said the addition of 180 new ZIP codes, representing 47 Illinois counties, brings the total high-risk ZIP codes to more than 1,300.

The agency said by this time next year, all remaining zip codes in the state will be included, implementing universal childhood lead testing statewide.

Late tax filers can still limit tax penalties

Illinois taxpayers who missed the April 15 deadline are reminded that it is not too late to file and minimize penalties and interest if a balance is owed.

While the deadline was almost three months ago, the Illinois Department of Revenue grants an automatic six-month extension of time to file a return with the deadline being Oct. 15.

Purple Heart medal returned

A Purple Heart medal has been returned to the family of a D-Day survivor.

Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs returned the medal to the brother and granddaughter of Army Private John L. Moore during a ceremony at the World War II Memorial in Decatur.

Moore returned to Illinois in 1946 after surviving the 1944 D-Day invasion in Europe.
