The House is set to take up the Senate-passed version of President Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending and tax bill on Wednesday afternoon.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and other House leaders are scrambling to unite the conference behind the latest iteration of the bill — passed Tuesday in the Senate with a tie-breaking vote from Vice President Vance — to have it on Trump’s desk before the July 4 weekend.
While Johnson has acknowledged that inclement weather could provide a road bump, the biggest obstacle will be convincing hardline Republicans to support the reconciliation package, which has undergone many changes since the lower chamber passed its version in May. The GOP can only lose three votes.
The House reconvened Wednesday at 9 a.m. EDT to debate after the Rules Committee advanced the legislation earlier in the morning following an hours-long meeting.
Votes are expected to begin around 11 a.m. EDT.
