Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw has had some wild looks — that tutu! — but the billowing hat she wore on the third season premiere of And Just Like That last month had many fans wondering what our favorite fictional New York City writer was thinking.
The show’s costume designer Molly Rogers isn’t having it, even though the moment left Carrie being derided as someone dressed as children’s character Strawberry Shortcake.

“Do you want Carrie to walk through the park with Seema with a straw hat on from L.L.Bean?,” Rogers asked in an interview with Page Six, referring to actress Sarita Choudhury’s character in the Sex and the City sequel series. “I don’t know, I can do it. I mean, I don’t want to.”
Rogers acknowledged that she hadn’t appreciated the feedback.
“That kind of annoyed me, because I think, at this point, we’re all a big family, we all watch the show, we know what it is,” she said. “That fazes you?”
She has a point. Since SATC debuted in 1998, Parker’s Bradshaw has stepped out in memorable looks including her so-called “naked dress”, a tie-dyed mess topped with a head scarf, and a milkmaid-inspired ensemble.
Carrie’s adventures with friends Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) require plenty of wardrobe changes.
Co-costume designer Danny Santiago had a feeling “people were going to come for us,” but they used it anyway. Parker wanted it.
“She grabbed it. It was on a table and she grabbed it,” Santiago said. “She just went to the table, looked in the mirror, and was like, ‘I love it. We have to do it.'”
In addition to playing the fashionable character for nearly 30 years, Parker has designed her own lines of shoes and women’s clothing, so she has definite opinions.

“We always put the weird stuff out, not knowing [what the actors will gravitate towards] — like the pigeon purse,” Rogers said.
A pigeon clutch that Bradshaw carried in season 2 also attracted attention.
“As soon as the paparazzi pictures [of Parker holding it] came out, it became like a thing,” Santiago said. “There was a waiting list, they got sold out.”
