Nelly Reveals the Warning He Gave Wife Ashanti Before Welcoming Their Son KK

Nelly set some clear boundaries with his wife Ashanti when it came time for the couple to welcome their first baby together.

Though the “Country Grammar” rapper was already a dad to four adult children, including two of his late sister’s kids whom he adopted, he wasn’t exactly ready to dive in when he was preparing to welcome a newborn at the age of 50.

“Listen, I told her before we had this baby, I said, ‘Now listen, I’m here. But chasing toddlers at 50…” Nelly shared during a Monday, June 23, appearance on Today alongside Ashanti. “I said, ‘As many as you want, but as many nannies as we can afford.’ I pay for a professional chaser.”

Nelly is also dad to Chanelle Haynes, 31, Cornell Iral “Tre” Haynes III, 26, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Chanetta Valentine, and adopted his sister Jackie’s kids Shawn “Lil Shawn” Thomas Jr. and Sydney Thomas in 2005.

He welcomed son Kareem Kenkaide “KK” with Ashanti, 44, in July 2024. And while the couple have opted not to share photos of the tiny tot on social media, he will seemingly appear on their upcoming Peacock reality show Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together.

The back of the baby’s head was shown in the show’s trailer as the couple discussed their differing parenting styles.

“KK is my first child, so I’m a little more frantic,” Ashanti says in the trailer.

“My parenting style is just don’t burn down the house,” Nelly quips in response.

While on Today, Ashanti admitted that sharing their hectic lives in the show is “a lot.”

“It’s a lot, but it’s real life and that’s the thing with us,” Ashanti explained of the show. “We are really in real life managing our lives together, our child, our careers, traveling, getting those moments, the cameras, it’s a lot.”

The couple first met in 2003 backstage at a Grammy Awards press conference. They dated on and off for 11 years before splitting the last time. They reunited in 2021 before officially sparking romance rumors and later confirming they were together in 2023.

Nelly and Ashanti quietly tied the knot in December 2023 and welcomed their son in July 2024.
