Halfway through the dinner, the mother-in-law brought up the miscarriage and tried to make a joke about it
A woman says she walked out of her mother-in-law’s birthday party after her recent miscarriage was “made fun of.”
In a post shared on Reddit, the anonymous 29-year-old writes that she had a “devastating” miscarriage two months ago.
“His family knew. They sent flowers and said the usual things, ‘everything happens for a reason,’ ‘next time will be different,’ etc.,” she writes.
The post continues: “Last weekend was my MIL’s birthday, and she insisted we come to her dinner. I was hesitant, but my husband wanted to go to show support.”
“Halfway through the dinner, she was talking to someone about grandkids, then turned to me and said, ‘Well, you tried, right? Maybe next time keep the baby in long enough for me to meet it.’ Then laughed like it was a joke,” she adds. “I stood up, told her she was cruel, and left.”
Now, the mother-in-law is “telling the whole family” that the woman is “emotionally unstable” and “ruined her birthday.”
“My husband supports me privately but says I could have just taken the high road,” she adds. “Was I overreacting to walk out?”
Other Reddit users are largely on the poster’s side, with many arguing the mother-in-law was “cruel’ and “heartless.”
Writes one: “I am so sorry for your loss. Your MIL should be too. You DID take the high road. She got as low as she could and you called her cruel and left. That’s extremely tame.
Adds another: “I’d tell everyone exactly how cruel she is. Your husband is foul for not calling out her garbage behavior. I’d have a hard time looking at him the same.”
