Six people are dead and two are missing after a boat capsized in Lake Tahoe on Saturday, with the U.S. Coast Guard on Sunday suspending its search for the missing victims.

Agencies searched more than 390 square miles for a combined 12 hours at the massive lake that straddles the California/Nevada border in the Sierra Nevada. The search was suspended pending further developments, the Coast Guard said.

“Suspending a search is always a difficult decision to make and weighs heavily on each Coast Guard member involved,” Coast Guard Cmdr. David Herndon said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those involved in the boat capsize.”

The boat, carrying 10 people, capsized Saturday afternoon. The Coast Guard’s Lake Tahoe station was alerted to it around 3 p.m. that day.

The 27-foot Chris-Craft boat sank after a storm caused 6- to 8-foot swells, NBC Bay Area reported.

Two of the people on the boat were rescued from the water and taken to a local hospital, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post. Six adults died and their bodies were recovered from the water, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities have not identified any of the people on the boat.
