NEED TO KNOW

  • A man acted “self-centered” at his daughter’s wedding, turning her ceremony into “an amateur stand-up routine” and making his speech about himself

  • One guest said on Reddit that everyone “felt so bad for the couple throughout the wedding”

  • “I spoke to some of the people I knew at the wedding, and we all had the same thought: ‘What was that?’ ” the wedding guest said

Wedding guests quickly learned why the groom’s side of the family doesn’t like one of their new in-laws.

In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, a guest recalled the time they attended the wedding of a “wonderful” couple. The issue was that the behavior of the bride’s dad was not so wonderful.

“I knew that the groom’s family weren’t very impressed by the bride’s father, but I didn’t really understand why until the wedding,” the guest wrote.

The bride’s father is ordained to perform marriages and “promised to pay for the wedding if he could officiate.” Because they weren’t in a financial position to “pass up that offer,” the bride and groom accepted his deal.

But instead of emotionally moving the couple with a heartfelt approach, the man left them and their guests confused by creating a ceremony personally tailored to himself.

“He spent most of the ceremony giving what was essentially an amateur stand-up routine about arguments he has with his wife,” the Redditor recalled.

The poster noted that the bride’s dad also used “props.”

They listed in a comment: “A gas canister, to represent the arguments he has with his wife about filling up the car. A flip phone, to represent the arguments they’ve had about not answering texts. An old coffee maker that she wanted to replace but he didn’t. A holey undershirt he refused to get rid of against her wishes.”

The bride and groom “just had to stand there” while he went on and on. After the pair finally exchanged vows, their ceremony concluded.

“When I exited the ceremony, I spoke to some of the people I knew at the wedding, and we all had the same thought: ‘What was that?’ ” the wedding guest said.

Afterward, the dad continued to embarrass his daughter and new son-in-law at their reception.

The bride’s mother and siblings gave “beautiful” speeches, and the groom’s family followed with even more “classy and touching” toasts. However, when it was the bride’s dad’s turn, he again let the newlyweds down.

“These are the topics he chose to explore in his speech: his career trajectory, his political and religious views, his car, more arguments he has with his wife, and how proud he was when his other children got married,” the Redditor said. “He barely seemed to even acknowledge the bride and groom.”

They continued, “I felt so bad for the couple throughout the wedding. They’re a great match and they did not deserve to have their wedding hijacked by a self-centered father.”

Reddit users labeled the post as “cringe.” In the comments section, they criticized the bride’s dad for “making the wedding about himself.”

Some Redditors shared similar scenarios that happened at their wedding.

“I told the emcee at my reception, ‘Under no circumstances are you to give my FIL (father-in-law) the microphone’ for this exact reason,” one Reddit user wrote. “Luckily, the emcee understood the assignment.”

Another person shared, “My FIL (father-in-law) literally has to be told to stop speaking. Similarly he just went on and on about random things that had little to do with us.”
