Kate Middleton may have dropped out of a recent royal event at the last minute — but her husband, Prince William, and her mother, Carole Middleton, were nonetheless in high spirits during the outing with a sweet and unexpected moment together.

Kate’s mom, 70, was photographed during the 2025 Royal Ascot event on June 18 sharing warm smiles and excited conversation with her son-in-law, 42, who was included in the original carriage list for the event alongside his wife, 43, despite her unplanned withdrawal. The couple was originally supposed to ride together in the second carriage, according to the list, but because of Kate’s absence, William was put in the first carriage with King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Carole was also spotted chatting up King Charles, 76, as she enjoyed the festivities alongside her daughter-in-law, Alizée Thévenet, who is married to Kate’s brother, James Middleton.

William still had some duties to perform despite his wife’s absence from the annual royal event. He joined his grandfather and the Queenin the royal procession and then presented the trophy for the Prince of Wales Stakes to Ombudsman, ridden by jockey William Buick.

This is the second year in a row that Kate has missed the Royal Ascot. In 2024, she skipped the annual event because she was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, which she revealed in March 2024 though she never specified further the type of cancer she was diagnosed with.

Kate recently made the transition back into public life, and according to People, the mother of three is taking it easy. “She’s being sensible,” the late Queen Elizabeth’s former spokeswoman Ailsa Anderson revealed to the outlet. “Listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life.”

But things are definitely going to start shifting for Kate and Will soon, particularly when it comes to the fact that, one day, they will ascend to the throne. “There are some major shifts coming behind the scenes,” a source told the outlet. “They are really finessing what works and what doesn’t.”
