Car advertisements are all over social media or TV commercials these days, but rewind to the 1960s and postcards were the go-to method for advertising luxury vehicles. These illustrations embodied the essence of all things luxury to promote the makes and models that ruled the decade.
Check out these luxury car ads from the ’60s and see if any ring a bell.
1. 1962 Rambler American Convertible
Nothing says 1960s luxury like a group of attractive people laughing on their way out of a sleek motorboat and into a yellow Rambler American convertible.
2. 1960 Buick Electra
As if the sharp blue, chromed-out Electra didn’t scream “1960s luxury car” all on its own, this advertisement plopped the car in front of a swanky mansion at a black-tie event. This one oozes opulence, folks.
3. 1964 Buick Wildcat
Because 1960s luxury cars look better parked shoreside with a lit-up bridge behind them. Ambiance is important.
4. 1963 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk
This advertisement for the ’63 Gran Turismo Hawk has “jetsetter” written all over it, adding to the car’s luxurious nature. From the well-dressed woman sitting on top of her fancy baggage to the global destinations strewn on the grass, this ad is all things elite.
5. 1968 AMC Ambassador
What better way to showcase a 1960s luxury car than by staging a valet situation outside of a high-class hotel? The marketing team at AMC knew exactly what they were doing.
6. 1964 Plymouth Fury
The simplicity of this advertisement allows the Fury to be the star of the show, err, we mean ad.
7. 1962 Buick Skylark
While we have to admit we mostly associate the Buick Skylark with “My Cousin Vinnie,” this advertisement makes it known that the Skylark is one of the most luxurious rides of the 1960s.
8. 1967 Buick Invicta
Sharp details, a candy apple paint job, chrome accents, and a blurred background? Oh, the Invicta is fancy, huh?
9. 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner Convertible
This advertisement reeks “upper-class.” There’s no way on Earth these smiling sweethearts got out of their fancy red convertible, skipped over to their yacht, and opened up that picnic basket to bologna and government cheese sandwiches.
10. 1963 Pontiac Convertible
An Athens backdrop for a 1960s luxury car. Nice touch.
