Kevin Costner Reveals Which of His Iconic Characters Would Have the Most Complicated Coffee Order (Exclusive) originally appeared on Parade.

Imagine the scene: a bustling coffee shop, and in walk the legendary characters of Kevin Costner‘s career. Who among them would give the barista the biggest headache? According to the actor himself, the answer lies with a certain Prohibition-era lawman known for his unyielding standards.

When asked which of his characters would have the most surprisingly specific coffee order, Costner didn’t hesitate, pointing directly to his role in the cinematic classic, The Untouchables. “Elliott Ness would definitely have the most complicated order because he’d want alcohol in his coffee… a hard thing to do in prohibition times,” he exclusively tells Parade. The image of the famously incorruptible agent trying to discreetly spike his morning brew is a delightful glimpse into how Costner continues to inhabit the minds of the characters who made him a Hollywood legend.

This connection to character and detail also shines through in his latest off-screen role as a coffee connoisseur. While developing his new line of blends with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Costner was just as particular as Ness, though his quest was for the perfect flavor, not a forbidden tipple. He took a hands-on approach to find a taste that felt authentic to him.

“In all honesty, I just settled in… I didn’t think I would be able to tell when it was just black coffee… and I don’t know that I have a description for the ‘this is it’ moment but it just felt right,” Costner explains of the development process. His goal was to create a balanced and genuine coffee experience, especially for his preferred drink. “Yes, I wanted to make sure that for the Mocha I never lost the coffee taste…”

This approach—whether imagining a character’s secret vices or crafting the perfect cup of coffee—is a reflection of a deeper philosophy Costner applies to his own life, particularly when it comes to the wisdom he shares with his children. When the conversation turns to fatherhood, the actor offers a poignant piece of advice he wishes he had received in his youth.

“I would tell my children not to hurry. Not to rush. To not feel behind others that seem to be moving ahead of you,” he shares. “It’s easy to feel like you’re behind when it seems like everyone else is getting ahead. It puts an unneeded pressure on you that their journey is their own.” For Costner, the ultimate goal isn’t just success, but fulfillment. “You can get paid a lot of money in America for doing a job you don’t like but to find a passion and to be able to make that your life’s work, so much so, that it’s almost your hobby, it’s something I wished I would have heard.”

From cinematic heroes to personal passions, it’s clear Costner believes the best things in life can’t be rushed.
