Brooke Shields Walked In On George H.W. And Barbara Bush In The Bedroom

Brooke Shields recently opened up about an unforgettable, and mildly mortifying, memory involving former President George H.W. Bush and first lady Barbara Bush during a visit to their Kennebunkport, Maine, estate.

While co-hosting Thursday’s episode of “Today with Jenna and Friends,” Brooke Shields sat down with Jenna Bush Hager and recounted an intimate, and hilarious, story involving Bush Hager’s late grandparents.

Shields shared that her friendship with George and Barbara Bush began in the 1980s and remained strong over the years.

While filming a movie in Boston, she received an unexpected phone call summoning her to Walker’s Point, the Bush family’s $13.5 million coastal retreat.

“I get a phone call, doesn’t say who he is, literally says, ‘Excuse me young lady, I hear you’re in the area. If you do not come to Kennebunkport, you are in trouble young lady,’” Shields recalled, revealing the caller was none other than George H.W. Bush himself. “So I brought my kids and we stayed there.”

The actress brought along her two daughters, Rowan, now 21, and Grier, now 18, for the trip, which took place about 15 years ago. But a cozy family getaway quickly turned into a sitcom-worthy moment after Shields noticed ocean water flooding the living room.

“I’m panicking, right?” she told Bush Hager. “And I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God, I gotta tell somebody, but nobody’s in the house!’”

With no one else around, Shields had no choice but to knock on the bedroom door of the former first couple.

With “the fear of God” in her, she entered their room only to find George and Barbara lounging in their recliners with TV dinners in hand, watching “Law & Order: SVU.” Barbara, still in her dressing gown, looked entirely unfazed by the intrusion.

“I just want to tell you that I think the house might have flooded, but I think I got it,” Shields recalled saying as she shielded her eyes.

Rather than worrying about the flooding, Barbara simply invited Shields to kneel between their chairs and join them for the rest of the episode.

“She’s like, ‘George, maybe Brooke can answer this question … Ask her, ask her,’” Shields recounted. “He goes, ‘Well, who do you think did it?’”

Laughing, Shields described the moment as surprisingly touching. “I was like, ‘This is a moment of my life that was so special.’”

Bush Hager was touched by the story and thanked Shields for sharing a glimpse of her grandparents’ warmth. Shields reflected further, revealing that George H.W. Bush had long been a supportive, almost grandfatherly presence in her life.

“I never had a grandfather, and since I was quite young, he [George] would give me boy advice and be like, ‘OK, I like that one. I don’t like this one,’” Brooke Shields said. “It was a very sweet relationship that I needed to have and hadn’t had anyone else.”
