Reported layoffs coming
A wave of layoffs will be coming this summer for Illinois workers.
According to data from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, hundreds of layoffs will occur at a half-dozen companies around northern Illinois over the summer. The layoffs came to light under terms of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires companies with more than 75 employees to provide 60 days or more of notice for planned layoffs.
According to the Peoria Journal-Star, nearly 2,100 employees will be laid off at 14 businesses in Illinois in the coming weeks.
ICE activities expected in Chicago
The federal government has prepped Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactical teams for deployment to Chicago.
According to Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office, federal agents were told they have 48 hours to “stand by and be ready to deploy.”
Earlier, Chicago police said that more than 15 people were taken into custody during a Tuesday evening protest against ICE activity. In total, 17 people were taken into custody.
Federal building vandalized
The FBI is looking for suspects after a federal building in Carbondale was defaced this week.
Authorities said the incident occurred June 10, when a group gathered outside the entrance of the Senator Paul Simon Federal Building. It was then someone vandalized the building’s exterior.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the FBI and reference “Carbondale Illinois Federal Building.”
