  • The scene was witnessed by Jonathan Marlowe, who was playing disc golf with friends

  • The hammerhead shark fell from the grasp of an osprey

A game of disc golf in South Carolina was interrupted last month when a hammerhead shark fell from the sky.

According to a Facebook post from the Myrtle Beach City Government, the chaotic scene occurred at the Splinter City Disc Golf Course in Myrtle Beach in May.

The post explains that disc golfer Jonathan Marlowe was teeing off at hole 11 when an osprey “flew overhead with its lunch.”

As two crows allegedly chased it into a tree, the osprey “lost its lunch in the chase,” the post explains, making the hammerhead shark fall on hole 11.

A photo attached to the Facebook post shows the animal, which Myrtle Beach officials identified as a bonnethead shark, a species of hammerhead shark, lying on the ground. Another shows Marlowe picking it up with one hand.

Known as the “fish hawk,” the osprey is the only bird known to “possess specially designed feet and claws for snatching prey from the water,” Popular Science explains.

According to the website, its talons “curve more than other avians, and spines on the pads of its feet work like barbs to grab fish scales.”

Marlowe told Garden & Gun that while it is not unusual to see an osprey carrying something in the area, he initially thought it was a “random fish.”

“We couldn’t believe it and kept asking ourselves, ‘Did that really just happen?’ ” he said.

The disc golfer told the outlet that after the encounter, he and his friends left the hammerhead under a tree in case the osprey came back for it. After he posted photos about the incident on Facebook, however, another disc golfer commented that they had found the shark under the tree.

“They were standing there in shock with no frame of reference for what could have possibly happened. But then they saw the post and said, ‘Thank goodness, because how do you explain a random hammerhead in the woods?’ ” shared Marlowe.
