Why Is Texture Spray Good for Fine Hair?

Wondering why texture spray is such a game-changer for fine hair? Our experts break it down. “Adding texture spray is great for fine hair, since the added volume makes the hair appear thicker and brings life to any hairstyle,” explains Annagjid “Kee” Taylor, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Deeper Than Hair salon. “Adding texture spray also provides grip and holds hairstyles in place, all while staying lightweight.”

Kim Gueldner, founder of Voël Hair, who has worked with Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry, prefers texture sprays over traditional hairsprays: “I tend to favor texture sprays over hairspray because you get nice lift, volume, and staying power with a lot of movement. If you have fine hair, texture sprays give you a nice amount of lift when sprayed at your roots and can also help your style last all day without being stiff.”

Many texture sprays also pull double duty as dry shampoo, which is great news for fine hair that tends to get oily quickly. “All of these texture sprays absorb oil, which is an added benefit,” notes Gela Hunkins, a celebrity hairstylist who works with T.V. star Holly Madison.

How Do You Apply Texture Spray to Hair?

Getting the most from your texture spray is all about application technique. “When using texture sprays, I section my hair and spray at the roots if I want to lift at my roots,” shares Gueldner. “When spraying all over, I lift the hair to get more underneath than just on top of it. Also, if you spray too much at the root, I will take the blow dryer and a brush, lift the root and really work in the product.”

Taylor offers more detailed instructions: “Texture spray can be used on either wet or dry hair. When styling, I prefer to use texture spray on dry hair for an instant boost. Start with clean hair, as this will allow the product to grip onto your strands. Before using, shake the product and hold the spray about an arms length away from the hair, and spray on the mid-length to the ends of your hair. Add to the roots for extra volume at the top. Finish the look by scrunching and tousling your hair, then style as desired!”

Is Texture Spray Safe for My Hair?

While texture sprays are amazing for adding instant volume to fine hair, Gueldner offers one important warning: “Most texture sprays are drying to the hair because they are similar to dry shampoos, adding more of a powdered substance,” she cautions. “You don’t want to use them too many days without washing because it can weaken the hair and cause breakage.”

To keep your fine hair healthy while enjoying the benefits of texture spray, be sure to wash your hair regularly and perhaps alternate with more hydrating styling products to maintain balance.

“This would be my best overall. It works on all hair types,” says Gueldner. “I use this on all clients, and I use it at home myself. Some texture sprays can be too heavy and dry out the hair. This one is light enough that it doesn’t do that.” The versatility and gentle formula make it perfect for daily use on fine hair that needs a volume boost without damage.

Gueldner adds that it’s especially good for oily hair and that the scent is “incredible.” While it’s a splurge, most experts agree it’s worth every penny for its performance on fine hair.
