Replace: It Slows Down or Freezes During Basic Tasks

According to Assurion, a smartphone should last at least three years, while a laptop or gaming console should last four to five years. An older device that lags or glitches while opening apps, browsing or running basic functions probably isn’t worth pouring money into.

Replace: It Can’t Run Current Software or Updates

When your device stops supporting app or system updates, you’re stuck with limited features and possible security issues due to vulnerability to hackers.

Repair: The Battery Life Is Getting Worse

A battery that drains within a few hours can be frustrating. iPhone and some Android phones allow you to check your phone’s battery health. Third-party apps that offer insights into battery health are also available. Battery replacements for phones typically cost $50 to $70, so it’s likely worth it to repair, according to Assurion. Additionally, you can check your laptop’s battery health.

Repair: The Screen Is Cracked

Screen replacements for phones generally cost from $79 to $300, according to Assurion. If that seems reasonable when you consider the age and condition of your phone, then you should repair it.

Replace: Repair Costs Are 50% or More of the Device’s Value

If repair costs for your device are at least 50% of what it would cost to buy a new one, Assurion recommends considering a new one. This is especially true if your device is older than three years.

Replace: Your Device Is Eligible for a Trade-In Program

Manufacturers or wireless phone service providers often give credit or gift cards for old devices, which might cover more than you expect toward the cost of a new electronic. Best Buy offers eGift cards when you trade in electronics — even those that aren’t functioning properly. The big-box retailer offers up to $725 for cellphones, up to $160 for headphones, up to $1,440 for tablets and up to $300 for wearables, like smartwatches.

Replace: You’ve Already Fixed It More Than Once

If you’ve already spent money repairing your electronic device more than once — especially for the same issue — you should consider replacing it if the device is older or damaged and will likely have additional problems.
