A majority of Americans said they will never be interested in buying cryptocurrency even with the ownership rising in the past few years, according to a new survey that was released on Tuesday.

The new Gallup found that 60 percent of respondents said they have no interest in buying cryptocurrency. Around 17 percent said they are intrigued by the potential investment, but are not planning to buy anytime soon. Another six percent are unsure about buying or are not familiar with cryptocurrency, while only four percent of Americans said they will buy cryptocurrency in the near future.

Around one-in-seven Americans, 14 percent, said they own cryptocurrency. Ownership of cryptocurrency has gone up among U.S. investors, going from single digits in 2021 to around 17 percent this year, according to the survey.

The percentage of investors who said they would never own cryptocurrency is at 64 percent in 2025. The figure is higher than the 72 percent in 2018, but lower than the 58 percent in 2021.

The ownership of bitcoin or another cryptocurrency is higher among men aged 18 to 49, around 25 percent, compared to those aged 50 and older, at 12 percent.

Nearly one-fifth, 19 percent,  of upper-income Americans, political conservatives and college graduates own a form of cryptocurrency.

Nearly all Americans said they have heard of cryptocurrency, with just five percent saying they have not. Just over a third, 35 percent, said they know “something” about cryptocurrency, compared to 60 percent who said they have heard of it, but do not know much about the digital currency.

The survey was conducted from June 2-15 among 2,017 adults. The margin of error was three percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
