Summer’s a popular vacation time, especially for those heading to the coast. The only downside is that summer trips often come with more crowds and higher prices than those taken at other times of the year. Fortunately, America’s coastlines are full of beautiful — and affordable — vacation destinations you can visit at any time of the year.

Murrells Inlet, South Carolina
Are you looking for charm, beach access and affordability? If so, Murrells Inlet is worth checking out.
Jenny White, founder of The Kai Life, called it “a total gem.” It’s widely known as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina.” It’s not far from Myrtle Beach either, so if you’re looking for more cuisine and recreational activities, it’s only a quick jaunt.
“It’s a great fit for couples, families or anyone looking for a budget-friendly Southern coastal vibe,” White noted. Besides seafood, the fishing village offers live music, plenty of beach access, the Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park.
Temperatures usually range from 60 to 90 degrees throughout the year, so it’s never too cold. On Expedia, hotel and flight vacation packages start at around $346 per person for a four-night stay. This includes round-trip flights from New York.

South Padre Island, Texas
Looking for that tropical island paradise feel? Blake Henry, executive director of Visit South Padre Island, recommended South Padre Island in Texas.
It’s right off the Gulf Coast and has plenty of white sandy beaches to enjoy. Since the temperature usually ranges from about 55 to 90 degrees, and the sun is always shining, you can go at nearly any time of the year.
Some of Henry’s suggestions include:
-
Sunrises and sunsets on the beach.
-
“Catch and cook” (which is where you go fishing and bring your catch to a restaurant to prepare it for you).
-
Sea Turtle, Inc. (the world’s largest sea turtle hospital).
-
Horseback riding on the beach.
-
Birding at the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center (also home to alligators).
-
Walks along the Sandcastle Trail.
-
Fireworks (in summer).
Prices vary based on when you go and your origination. A five-night trip with accommodations and flights from New York starts at around $445 per person on Expedia. But you could save money by camping or taking an RV.
Orange Beach, Alabama
Head south to Orange Beach, Alabama if you’re looking for a laid-back coastal destination. Fiorella Yriberry, a travel expert at RVshare, said it’s one of their favorites.
“The white sand beaches and gentle waves are amazing for families with kids. It’s way less crowded and more budget-friendly than most similar spots in Florida, and prices in the off seasons are significantly cheaper,” Yriberry said.
Other things to do include biking through Gulf State Park, beach-combing and sandcastle-building classes. And, of course, there’s plenty of seafood to be had.
A five-night trip from Seattle, Washington to Orange Beach starts at about $940. This includes the hotel and round-trip flight. Trips originating from the East Coast are cheaper.
It rarely drops below 60 degrees in the winter, but temperatures can reach the 90s in the summer, so bring your beach gear if you’re going at that time.
St. Simons Island, Georgia
Pam Brand from Discovering Coastal Georgia recommended St. Simons Island in Georgia. As with anywhere else, you can splurge — but you can also keep costs low.
Some free hotspots include Ft. Frederica and Christ Church. If you don’t mind spending a little money, you can soak up some history at the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum for $6 (kids) or $12 (adults). And, of course, there’s plenty of delicious — and affordable — cuisine to be had.
On Expedia, a five-day trip from New York to St. Simons Island starts at around $630 per person. It includes accommodations and flights. Temps range from about 60 to 90 degrees, depending on when you go.
Rincón, Puerto Rico
White also recommended Rincon, Puerto Rico as a cheap coastal town with a more tropical vibe.
“Rincón is a low-key surf town on Puerto Rico’s west coast that flies under the radar,” she said.
You don’t need a passport. Flights are often more affordable than, say, going to Hawaii. On Expedia, a five-day trip from New York starts at about $400 per person (flights and hotels included). Once there, there’s a host of free activities waiting for you — including snorkeling, waterfall hikes and surfing.
