Household appliances can make life easier, but some should never be left running unattended due to the risk of fires, water damage, or other mishaps. Experts highlight five appliances that require constant monitoring.
Household appliances generally make life easier, but that doesn’t mean they’re foolproof, which is why it’s essential to stay present in your home while running them. According to Southern Living, experts highlight five appliances in particular that you should not leave running unattended under any circumstances.
The Dryer
Due to the fact that lint can build up inside of a dryer vent and cause fires, it is best to not run your dryer unless you’re around to monitor it, explains Mark Halberg, a licensed electrician at Prairie Electric. “The clothes dryer is hands down the biggest offender when it comes to house fires caused by appliances,” he says.
Space Heaters
Plug-in space heaters are popular solutions during the cold winter months but should not be left turned on if you’ve gone out. “They draw a massive amount of electrical current which can overheat older wiring inside your walls without tripping the breaker right away,” Halberg says.
Toaster Ovens
Though small in size, toaster ovens should still be monitored closely and not left unattended, notes Shirley Hood, appliance specialist at Abt Electronics. “While many modern toasters and toaster ovens have removable crumb trays, most people don’t clean them after each use,” she says.
Microwaves
As Hood says, “A microwave is great until it’s not.” Essentially, she says, there are many mistakes people can easily make that can result in fires and other mishaps, which is why it’s essential to stay nearby when heating something up.
Dishwashers And Washing Machines
Generally speaking, it’s usually ok to have your dishwasher or washing machine running while you’re in another room of the home, Hood states, but leaving either of these appliances on overnight or while you’re out of the house is less advisable. “Being present allows you to fix an issue before it gets worse,” she says.
