40 Years Ago Today, This ‘80s Alt Rock Legend Survived Harrowing Near-Death Experience originally appeared on Parade.

August 10, 1985, started as just another day of competitive sailing for Simon Le Bon, but it would end with the Duran Duran frontman staring death in the face beneath the waters off the English coast. Forty years later, the 66-year-old singer’s survival story remains one of the most dramatic rescues in maritime history.

The Bushey, England native was competing in the prestigious Fastnet yacht race aboard his 78-foot yacht “Drum” when disaster struck. The boat’s experimental keel suddenly broke away from the hull, causing the massive vessel to capsize and trap Le Bon and five crew members in an air pocket beneath the overturned boat.

For what felt like an eternity – nearly 40 minutes – the men fought for survival as their lungs filled with a deadly mixture of diesel fumes and battery acid. Eighteen other crew members had managed to climb onto the hull, but Le Bon and his five companions faced a terrifying reality: the small air pocket was all that stood between them and death.

The Royal Navy rescue that followed was nothing short of heroic. A Navy diver managed to reach the trapped men and guide them to safety, though Le Bon’s rescue came with an unexpected twist that would be broadcast around the world. His pants got caught during the underwater escape, forcing him to remove them. Footage of the rock star being hoisted into a rescue helicopter wearing only his underwear became an iconic image.

Le Bon himself found humor in the situation years later, recalling how a rescuer called out about his missing pants. The contrast between his glamorous rock star image and the vulnerable reality of survival created a moment that was both humbling and humanizing.

The psychological impact of the near-death experience was significant. Days after the rescue, Le Bon developed a stress-related rash and struggled with sleep issues. The trauma was so intense that he avoided watching any footage of the incident for 31 years, finally viewing his rescue for the first time in 2016 during a BBC documentary.

What makes Le Bon’s survival even more remarkable is the timing. The accident occurred just one month after Duran Duran’s legendary performance at Live Aid, when the band was at the height of their global fame.

Despite the trauma, Le Bon’s perspective on the experience reflects remarkable resilience. He’s described it as “life-changing” while acknowledging that everyone faces challenging moments – his just happened to be unusually well-publicized.
