A child in England has died after being struck by a bus outside a hospital.
At around 4 p.m. local time on Thursday, Aug. 7, the 4-year-old boy identified locally as Zaahir Jan, was outside the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Kent after reportedly visiting his grandmother when the crash happened, according to the BBC, and UK newspapers The Telegraph and Kent Live.
Kent Police told the outlets a white single-decker bus was traveling near the entrance to the A&E department when the vehicle and the child collided.
“It is reported that the pedestrian, a four-year-old boy, left the hospital on foot and a collision took place,” police said in a statement, per The Telegraph. “The child was taken inside the hospital, and a short while later was sadly confirmed deceased.”

Police are asking for witnesses and anyone who has dashcam footage of the incident to contact them amid their investigation into the crash.
“Investigators from Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward,” police said, per The Telegraph.
The Kent Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on the incident.
“We are very saddened by yesterday’s tragic incident and send our sincere condolences to the family,” Tracey Fletcher, chief executive of East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust, told the BBC in a statement.
The company that ran the bus, Stagecoach, told the BBC in a statement: “This is an ongoing investigation and we are currently co-operating with the police.”

Azaria Green, the boy’s mother, described him in a GoFundMe that was set up to raise funds for his funeral as a “funny boy with a cheeky smile” that could “make anyone’s heart full.”
“… I can’t believe you are gone from me. I can’t believe they couldn’t save you, I can’t believe this happened. I didn’t even get to tell you how much I love you,” Green wrote on the website.
