An armed man was killed after exchanging fire with law enforcement officers at a Texas Border Patrol facility on Monday, July 7, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to USA TODAY.

“This morning an individual opened fire at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen,” Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in an email.

The city in South Texas is in Hidalgo County along the Mexican border.

“Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter,” McLaughlin said.

Two officers and one Border Patrol employee suffered injuries in the incident, including one shot in the knee, the spokesperson said.

The Border Patrol Rio Grande Valley Sector said a active shooter incident took place at Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector Annex and the shooter was dead, according to the agency’s social media page.

All three officers injured were taken to a hospital.

According to a statement provided to USA TODAY by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the officer shot was in stable condition on Monday.

About 5:53 a.m. local time, the statement continues, the McAllen Police Department received calls regarding shots heard from outside the area of the McAllen USBP Station near the airport. McAllen police notified the FBI San Antonio Division and its local partners and responded to the incident.

“The armed suspect, an adult male, engaged the law enforcement officers responding to the scene and officers returned fire,” the FBI said in the statement. “There is currently no threat to public safety that we are aware of. However, out of an abundance of caution, the FBI asks that the public avoid the area if possible.”

The case is under investigation by the FBI, officials said.

This is a developing story.
