  • Wedding season is in full swing, which means you’ve probably gotten an invite to one requiring “formal” attire.

  • Formal wedding attire usually means “finding that sweet spot between elegant and appropriate without going full black tie,” says Founder and luxury bridal stylist Maisie-Kate Keane.

  • Ahead are 12 dress ideas perfect for any formal wedding.

It’s peak wedding season and you’ve received your first (of probably many) invitations requesting formal wedding attire. Naturally, your first thought will probably be: What am I going to wear? Followed immediately by: What exactly is formal attire? So before you start frantically Googling, we’re here to help you break down the common wedding dress confusion that surrounds “formal attire.”

In the most basic of definitions, a formal wedding is the next step down from black tie. A black tie wedding requires tuxedos and floor-length gowns made of luxe fabrics and sophisticated silhouettes. Ultimately, when you think of black tie, think of the Oscars and Hollywood glam. But for a formal wedding, there’s a little more wiggle room with rules.

Mastering formal wedding attire usually means “finding that sweet spot between elegant and appropriate without going full black tie,” says Founder and luxury bridal stylist Maisie-Kate Keane. Being slightly less formal than black tie, formal wedding attire calls for equal parts elegance and class, but less prim and proper. While a tux isn’t necessarily required (unless the bride and groom hit you with the black-tie optional dress code), it’s more common for men to dress in a dark suit with a tie. Women, on the other hand, have a bit more free rein— which is where it gets tricky.

“Women often choose floor-length gowns or elegant midi dresses in fabrics like chiffon, velvet, or silk. Dressy cocktail dresses and jumpsuits work too, especially when paired with heels and polished accessories,” says Keane.

Depending on the wedding theme and overall vibe, a floor-length dress is the preferred option for formal wedding attire, but it doesn’t need to have the same opulence as a black tie gown. As Keane stated, everything from a flowy, chiffon maxi dress for a summery or beachy wedding event to a fancy cocktail look is acceptable for a formal wedding. However, don’t confuse a fancy cocktail dress with cocktail attire, which generally allows for shorter, more leg-baring looks.

Another great option is a tea-length or midi dress. For example, a longer Hervé Legér dress (especially amid the current bandage dress renaissance) or a fun and flouncy high-low moment. But whatever you decide to wear, just remember to style your look accordingly.

“Balance is key! If your dress has a lot of detail, keep accessories simple, and if it’s minimalist, feel free to add a statement earring or a bold lip and fun bag or shoes,” Keane adds.

So to help you be the best (and most appropriately dressed) guest this season, we’ve rounded up a selection of outfit ideas that will let people know you understand the assignment and can celebrate in style.

A Silk Slip Maxi Dress

“A silk slip dress is a timeless choice for a formal wedding,” says Keane. Think Victoria Beckham chic. The versatile style, which can be worn for various occasions, is easy to slip on and, without fail, looks incredibly clean and luxe. And while you can splurge on a Victoria Beckham or Nili Lotan designer slip, not all slip dresses need to break the bank, thanks to brands like Reformation and Banana Republic.

A High-Low Dress

High-low dresses are a fun way to break up the floor-length rule for formal wedding attire. A high-low dress is fancier than a short cocktail look but isn’t always formal enough for a black-tie wedding. These dresses, which can feature anything from a draped or bubble hem, are an ideal choice for those who love to break it down on the dance floor without concern about trampling on hemlines. Just watch out for the train behind you.

An Exaggerated Side-Slit Dress

Who doesn’t love a high-slit gown? Not only are they statement-making, but they also make an otherwise constricting garment easy to move in. And while middle slits tend to be more versatile for formal and black-tie dress codes, the side slit is seen as sexier. So, depending on the wedding vibe, a side-slit dress can add a bit of flair to a formal look—especially when embellished with beading or feathers like the dress above.

A One-Shoulder Dress

If you’re into the asymmetry of a side-slit dress, then you’ll probably like the idea of a one-shoulder look. There’s something about the one-shoulder silhouette that makes even the simplest of dresses feel more elevated, which is exactly what you need for a formal wedding occasion. Whether it’s long-sleeved, sleeveless, intricately wrapped around the neck, or ¾ quarter-length, it’s hard to go wrong with a sleek one-shoulder style.

Some Classy Cut-Outs

Believe it or not, there’s a tasteful way to do cut-outs for a wedding. And no, they don’t always have to scream sexy or look like a revealing naked dress. So if you want to rock a dress with side cut-outs, go for it. But for formal wedding attire, the less dramatic, the more acceptable. We’re talking high, bodice “slits” on the side or front of the dress versus low, hip-baring cut-outs that can be considered trashy.

A Tea-Length Moment

Slightly more formal than a short cocktail dress, tea-length is always a classy option for both formal and warm-weather weddings. But not every tea-length dress needs to be an A-line dress or look like something pulled from a royal garden party. A tea-length or midi dress, which can hit right above the ankles or below the calf, can come in many different styles—from Kate Middleton’s Self Portrait suit dress to a vintage-inspired off-the-shoulder sheath like the one above.

A Draped Dress

For a stylish twist on a body-con look,  try a draped dress. Draped dresses, normally made of a soft knit or jersey material, are as chic as they are comfortable. And while draped dresses can be slinky, they’re also intricate and elegant. In the last few years, Norma Kamali’s Diana Dress has reigned supreme as a wedding guest dress favorite, along with various draped dress designs from Jacquemus.

Some Subtle Sheerness

Take a more conservative approach to the celeb-loved naked dress with a subtle sheer look. Whether you prefer a flowy sheer skirt at the bottom of an opaque bodice or long sheer sleeves—like Natasha Richardson’s iconic second wedding dress in The Parent Trap —a touch of sheer can be a stylish, unexpected way to break up a dress that is both sexy and soft.

A Dress-like Jumpsuit

While a jumpsuit would not be recommended for a black-tie wedding, it could work as formal wedding attire depending on the design and styling of the look. Luxe fabrics such as silk, organza, and velvet help to elevate a typical jumpsuit (just like a dress) in addition to the silhouette. Halter, long-sleeve, and off-the-shoulder jumpsuits look a bit fancier than a sleeveless, overalls-style jumpsuit. In addition to flowy and wide-leg pants that mimic the style of a skirt or dress.

A Tuxedo Dress

Appropriate for a black tie or formal wedding, the tuxedo dress (or deconstructed tux top and skirt) is a timeless option that also makes a sophisticated statement. Whether the silhouette resembles that of a classic suit jacket or the more modern halter look, similar to Lea Michele’s recent Tony Awards gown, the typically black or white look is also an effortless garment that requires minimal styling thanks to its naturally formal aesthetic.

A Column Dress

Similar to a silk slip dress, a minimalist column dress is another sleek and sophisticated formal wedding attire option for an “elegant and quietly confident” look. “Think Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy – clean lines and no fuss!! Style it with sculptural earrings, barely-there heels, and a slick bun or soft waves,” says Keane of one of her favorite formal attire staples.

A Matching Skirt Set

*Potential Spoiler Alert for The Bear*

If you’re watching the current season of The Bear, you can’t miss Ayo Edebiri’s Sydney dressed in a super-chic multicolored silk top and skirt matching set for the wedding in episode five. A matching set is a fresh take on formalwear that is both modern and put-together. Sets have even become popular attire options for brides. But one of the main things we love about matching sets is their versatility. Wear the full set to the ceremony and style another look with just the top or skirt for the day after or before events!
