If you’re trying to cut your expenses, you should consider getting your dad something more creative than another tie, tool set or gadget. Often, opting for experiences together can make the holiday even more meaningful and memorable while you save money.

In a recent article, money expert Rachel Cruze recommended 10 affordable and awesome Father’s Day gift ideas. Use this list as inspiration while you think about what your dad likes most.

Special Meal at Home

You might feel tempted to treat your dad to steak at a fancy restaurant. However, a similar meal at home puts less of a dent in your budget, is more peaceful and doesn’t require hoping you can get a table or reservation on the holiday.

Cruze suggested getting meat at a butcher shop, which should still cost less than a restaurant meal. Look at recipes online to see what ingredients you need and shop around for deals.

Handmade Gift

Even if you haven’t made something for your dad since your school days, a handmade gift is always special, and can be as simple or fancy as you want it to be. If you’re already a crafter, you can put your skills to work by making something your dad would love, but even something basic like a handmade Father’s Day card or drawing can do the trick.

Father’s Day Cookout

If you want to go bigger than a simple meal in the kitchen, consider hosting a backyard cookout for your dad and his loved ones. Cruze wrote that this can also be a great way to show appreciation to multiple fathers at once. While you can always do the basics like hot dogs or burgers on the grill, consider looking up new recipes to make the event even more special.

Local Father’s Day Events

Since the holiday falls on a busy weekend, you’re sure to find local events that are specifically for Father’s Day or related to your dad’s interests. For example, you might enjoy music and food at a festival in town, tour a historical building or visit a fun attraction.

Some places, like the Cincinnati Zoo and Charles M. Schulz Museum, even waive the admission cost for dads on this special day, so check with local businesses.

Car Wash

Many fathers take pride in keeping their cars in pristine shape, so treating them to a free car wash might be the best Father’s Day gift. But get permission for this one first, and be prepared that your dad might want to playfully scrutinize your work.

Cruze wrote, “He might even get a kick out of showing you his tried and true method for getting it just right.”

Handwritten Letter

While a handwritten letter might not sound like a real gift at first, Cruze explained that a simple note of appreciation can leave a lasting impact. If you get writer’s block, think about the times when your dad helped you, taught you important things or simply showed that he loves you. You don’t have to make it complicated, either.

Fishing Trip

A day at the local lake or a weekend fishing getaway can be a great choice if your dad is an outdoorsman. You’ll have plenty of time to get away from busy everyday life to bond and enjoy nature, which your father will appreciate even if he can’t brag about catching a big fish.

Backyard Movie Night

You don’t have to pay for cinema tickets to enjoy a flick with your dad; look no further than your backyard. Think about the types of movies he likes, pick a long-time favorite or look for recommendations online, and then get started planning for a special movie night.

Cruze wrote, “Set up a small screen or projector, pop some popcorn, snag an extra cozy outdoor chair and hit play on one of dad’s all-time favorites.”

Game of Catch

Sometimes, a simple activity like playing catch is just what your father needs to have some fun and remember old times with the family. It’s also an easy, budget-friendly gift since all you need is a ball and some space in your backyard or a local space.

Simple Coffee

As life gets busier, it gets harder to sit down for some quality time with your dad. Try heading to his favorite coffee shop or checking out a new cafe. While you both relax and enjoy a drink, you can catch up on each other’s lives and share your favorite memories and laughs.
